Hidalgo ISD extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Fernando Castillo, who has served as Interim Superintendent since November 2024 and announced his departure to the Board of Trustees during yesterday's regularly scheduled board meeting. During his brief tenure as interim superintendent, Dr. Castillo dedicated his service to initiate innovative programs for the district. These impactful initiatives include the introduction of a dynamic rocketry program and the establishment of industry-based certifications in construction and advanced manufacturing/engineering, significantly enhancing opportunities for our students. Furthermore, Dr. Castillo fostered crucial relationships that hold immense promise for the future of Hidalgo ISD and its students. His efforts opened avenues for potential partnerships with esteemed institutions such as Texas A&M University, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), the Port of Brownsville, and even facilitated arrangements for students and teachers to visit SpaceX. Under Dr. Castillo's leadership, the Board of Trustees initiated a $25.5 million bond election aimed at constructing state-of-the-art career and technology facilities, an agricultural barn, and a sports center for softball and tennis athletes. This strategic investment will pave the way for the introduction of invaluable programs such as Future Farmers of America (FFA), cosmetology, a certification-based culinary arts program, and district-based HVAC and welding programs, further enriching the educational landscape for our students. Dr. Castillo has graciously offered his continued support to the district as the search for a permanent superintendent commences this month. Hidalgo ISD remains committed to a seamless transition and ensuring the continued success of our students and community.
