Student Council Elections

student councilYour vote is your voice! Have you ever heard that a vote is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democracy society? We the people have the power to change the world, one vote at a time! By voting, people voice their rights and engage in a civic society. Afterall, voting is a citizen’s responsibility and a constitutional right.

With general Elections coming up in November, Hidalgo Elementary took the initiative to educate students in school elections by hosting a student council election. “Our main priority in introducing a Student Council election was to help our students exercise their voice and help them understand that their voice matters whether that is in the community, local, state, or national level,” said Tania Gajeda, Hidalgo Elementary Counselor.

Hidalgo Elementary takes pride in building proactive citizens and well-rounded leaders. “We want to emphasize on the importance of voting because we are given that right as citizens. We want to teach our students that when we vote, we vote for leaders that will represent us and our ideas, and in return, these leaders support our interests as well,” adds Daniel Villegas, Hidalgo Elementary’s 5th grade Math teacher.

Students in 3rd through 5th grade were given the opportunity to participate at the student council election. Students held different positions such as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and historian. Those who were not running for any of these positions were given the power to vote for the best candidate. A student council consists of members that are elected by their peers in each grade level. In return, student council helps scholars develop leadership and teamwork skills. Our focus with student council is for our students to become leaders and help them recognize the importance of their vote,” adds Villegas.

“Your vote for me will not be in vain, I will make you proud!” exclaimed Venezia Razo, 3rd grade student as she firmly pointed to the crowd. The enthusiasm of these participants was very contagious and although they were running against each other, there was a sense of peace, respect, and consideration towards each other. For instance, one of the candidates was very nervous and was barely capable of reciting her speech- “Vamos Maria, tu puedes!” several students chanted in the crowd. Maria Elena Guerra, Hidalgo Elementary assistant principal stood by her side to help ease her nerves. With the support and excitement generated from the crowd, Maria was able to defeat her nerves and deliver her speech confidently. Hidalgo Elementary School truly demonstrated their great teamwork abilities. What a way to bring everyone together!

Although students may be too young to vote in November, Hidalgo Elementary educators took this as an opportunity to help students engage, get involved and be informed with their right to vote and take action in participating during the student council elections. In addition, it educates students about fairness and making decisions as a group.

In honor of Election Day, Hidalgo Elementary held this student council election to inform the students of what’s happening in our society today. But most importantly, to teach them how critical it is for them to voice their vote now, and then. Want to see change in the world? Be that change for the world today. Cast your vote on Election Day. Your vote counts. May you voice your vote for a better tomorrow! And may the best candidate win!” just like Bryan Lopez, 3rd grade student recited during his speech
